Sample of houses

Situation

829 inhabitants, of whom 522 resident (others work in other islands & Male). No evacuees from other islands. Approx 130 households.

Entire island inundated to depth of about 50 – 60 cm. Many yard walls collapsed + minor damage to house interiors / furniture & contents.

Debris on roads largely removed.

Health centre: loss of medical, pharmaceutical, laboratory equipment and stores.

Assessment

1. Accommodation

No significant structural damage

2. Water supply

Drinking water:

Main source is rainwater:

*     8 x 10,000 l public ferro-cement tanks. About ½ full, undamaged.

*     4 x 5,000 l public HDPE tanks – knocked over and emptied, undamaged and now replaced upright.

*     176 individual household tanks, most 2, 500 litres, about ½ full.

Estimated sufficient water held for 20 days consumption. Adequate storage available.

Bottled water sent as assistance and distributed among households.

Open dug wells:180 household wells – contaminated with saltwater in all but 6. Most have been emptied and flushed, but still brackish.. Health centre staff have been adding chlorine to wells daily (not to rainwater collectors). Well water used for bathing, washing, toilets etc.

Adequate chlorine available (1 drum).

3. Sanitation

Individual septic tanks with soakaways. About 10 reported to be blocked. No reports of leakage or damage to septic tanks. .

4. Solid waste management

No debris seen. Leaves dying on trees.

Some small fish in debris, but not large numbers. Removed when debris removed.

5. Mosquito control: No mosquito problems as yet.

Recommendation

1. Drinking water

Will need further supplies of drinking water to supplement rainwater. Adequate storage available.

Recommend chlorination of rainwater collectors, and cease chlorination of open dug wells.

Lower priority for desalination plant than Ungoofaru.

Continue emptying and flushing of open dug wells to reduce salinity.

Inadequate collection space for 4 x 5,000 l HDPE public rainwater tanks (around 16 sq m): suggest connect to adjacent building.

2. Replacement of fruit bearing trees
